General De Gaulle got France out of NATO in 1966, in his desire to be more independent from the US. Reversing this and joining NATO again will be controversial in France;on the left & the Gaullist right ( such as De Villepin).A large proportion of French people consider Sarkozy an "Atlantiste " (Too close to Washington), this move just confirms it.
